Since January 2010, GIESD at Yale has started a self-funded program for high school and college school students. This program is designed to provide a research-based experience to selected high school, undergraduate and graduate students, with the goal of enhancing their capacity building, research skills preparation and cultural exchanges.
The students work on specific research assignment of Yale Collaborative Urban Environmental Crisis Management (UECM) Research Project under the supervision of the program mentor. In addition to the research experience, students participate in Yale lectures and seminars, during which they interact with their peers and members of the Yale faculty. A site visit to New York-New Haven-New London area is arranged, through which students acquire a better understanding of American history, culture, economics and life. Specific seminar is held, where invited speakers relate their experiences and the decisions they faced on the road to careers in liberal arts and science. This provides students with the opportunity to interact with faculty members in an informal setting, and gives them the chance to hear different perspectives on issues related to career development. Those students interested in Yale campus life are also given the opportunity to "round" with variety of museums on campus. The above activities allow students to step out of their research experience for a time, and get a glimpse of Yale campus life, and life as a student in an academic institution.
At the end of the program, students present their work in a seminar session, sometimes attended by faculty and students from throughout the Yale community. It is hoped that through these activities, students will gain first-hand knowledge of research and academics, and that these experiences and the contacts that arise from them will foster their pursuit of academics.
The EEP program recruits on a voluntary registration basis. The program organizers review all application materials, looking for those with high academic potential, good English proficiency and strong willingness of capacity building improvement. The participants into the EEP training sessions have covered a wide range of schools and colleges from United States and especially China. Our college student participants have come from Washington University, Northern Arizona State University, Ohio State University, University of California at Irvin, and University of Rochester in the United States, Shanghai International Studies University, Beijing Foreign Studies University, Central University of Finance and Economics, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Beijing Information Science and Technology University, Tianjin University and Donghua University in China. While the program participants also come from top high schools in China, eg. Yucai High School, Shenzhen Experimental School, Cixi Middle School, Beijing Shangli International School, and the High School Affiliated to Renmin University of China etc. | |
